1985 Secrets, lies, and reunions. 1985 has it all, but above all it has love. As always and as it should be. The year is a tumultuous one for the perennially in love Scorpios. Secrets from Robert’s long buried past wreak havoc with their happiness. A visit from Holly’s cousin, Algernon, kicks off the New Year. Given his past experience with members of the With the murder case solved, Robert grows increasingly restless. He and Holly share numerous talks about moving on and changing jobs. Holly is supportive of Robert’s wanderlust until a possible return to the WSB is mentioned. She expresses jealousy toward Robert’s relationship with Sean. The two eventually come to an understanding and all remains well in the Scorpio home as they decide to remain in Port Charles. Robert is the toast of the law enforcement set as he is honored at a tribute dinner in New York. Sean serves as emcee and Holly arranges for friends from Port Charles to join them for a surprise roast after the ceremony. The merriment is interrupted, for Robert at least, by the unexpected arrival of his ex-wife Anna Devane. Anna assures Robert she has no ulterior motive for contacting him and he is skeptical to say the least. Trust is clearly an issue between the two. There is an obvious change in Robert’s demeanor after his meeting with Anna and Holly is quick to spot it. He tells her it is nothing and so begins a challenging time in the Scorpios’ marriage. Holly returns to Port Charles to support Tania following her miscarriage. Robert remains in New York to follow up on leads with Sean regarding the Aztec Treasure. Whilst at home, Holly receives a telegram allegedly from her Nanny explaining that a former charge of hers is to pay Holly a visit and she requests that Holly looks after her. None other than Anna Devane arrives on the Scorpios’ doorstep. The ever hospitable and far too trusting Holly welcomes her into her home and invites her to stay as Anna leads Holly to believe that she is down on her luck rather than admitting she is one of New York’s finest jewelry fences. When Robert calls Holly to check in, she informs him she has a surprise for him when he returns home. Surprise is an understatement for Robert’s reaction to arriving home to find Anna Devane not only in his living room, but to find out his wife has invited her to stay with them. He tears into Anna and is interrupted by a buoyant Holly bounding down the stairs to welcome him home. Whilst Holly is out of the room, Robert demands that Anna get out of his house. She explains how she ingratiated herself and he will hear none of it. She feigns a departure and as Holly returns to the room, Anna faints revealing a scar on her face that she had kept hidden by her hair. Anna explains to Holly that she used to be a secretary at the WSB and her presence brings back painful reminders for Robert. Holly is confused as to Robert’s increasingly hostile reaction to Anna as well as the lack of answers she receives from either her husband or Anna. Robert is plagued with flashbacks at every turn and it is revealed that Anna was an agent for the WSB assigned by Sean Donely to work a case with Robert years before. Whilst on assignment the quarrelling duo gave in to their circumstances and apparently their infatuation turned to love and they married. The liaison was brief and ended when Robert discovered Anna was a double agent and a fellow WSB agent died because of her betrayal and Robert’s eventual cover-up. The guilt of his past actions and of keeping secrets from Holly starts to weigh heavily on Robert. He is withdrawn and moody, quiet and distant. Holly is keen to know the reasons for the drastic changes in her husband, but respects his request not to press for answers. Holly accompanies Celia on a shopping trip to New York which quickly turns into a solo excursion once Jimmy Lee Holt, Celia’s fiancé, sweeps into town to take her back to Port Charles. Whilst alone, Holly falls victim to a trap set for her by Anna. She is arrested for possession of stolen goods as a result and Robert comes to her aid. Once home in Port Charles, another piece of stolen property is found in their home. Robert moves heaven and earth to clear his wife’s name. During this time, Robert is certain Anna is behind the frame and is also realizing Sean’s part in the Aztec Treasure business. Holly is reluctant to be Celia’s maid of honor given her present circumstances, but Celia and Jimmy Lee insist. She attends the wedding rehearsal and Robert calls to tell her that the charges have been dropped. They celebrate that very night by going to dinner with Sean and Anna. Life continues for the Scorpios and the rest of Port Charles as Holly throws a shower for Celia. Deeply entrenched in his own troubles, Robert stays out all night. Holly is concerned and expresses her worry the following morning. He again requests that she not ask any questions. Faced with the reality of Sean’s involvement with the treasure, Robert tells Holly they may have to give up their house and his job. Holly is visibly shaken, but supports him. Whilst Robert deals with the prospect of Sean’s arrest and his past actions regarding Anna, Holly confides in Celia about her concerns for Robert. The Quartermaines host an engagement party for Celia and Jimmy Lee. Robert enlists Holly’s to cover his absence for the better part of an hour. Although he keeps Holly in the dark as to the reasons, she is quick to come to his aid. In the midst of the turmoil in their lives, their love shines through. “Have I told you today that I love you very much?” he asks softly. With a small smile, she responds, “Yeah. A dozen times in the last five minutes without even saying a word.” As the evidence against Sean mounts, Robert shuts out Holly completely both literally and figuratively. He continues to be mired in the Aztec Treasure that has now been stolen from Sean. Holly demands answers after he comes home from an evening’s encounter with both Sean and Anna. He remains tight-lipped and the next day is off to Ottawa to find information about Anna’s past. He returns home with plans to tell Holly the truth, but they are interrupted and he leaves. Needing answers, Holly seeks the truth from Anna then has a change of heart as she knows it is Robert with whom she must speak. At home, Robert is again ready to talk to Holly; however she puts him off as she has plans with Celia. Not pleased, he leaves the house. Still in search of the truth, Holly visits Sean to ask for information regarding Robert and Anna’s professional relationship in the WSB. She now knows Anna was an agent as Robert had informed her of that fact before they were interrupted the previous day. Sean reveals that they were partners and that Anna’s scar is a result of a near death experience whilst in the WSB. Robert arrives home to soft music and martinis and a wife in need of confessing. She tells him that she spoke with Sean. Robert takes that moment to tell Holly everything about his past with Anna, their marriage, her acts as a traitor, and his part in the cover-up. Holly is hurt, betrayed, and deceived. She feels cheated that her husband acted less than honorably and that he is a far cry from the man whom she believed him to be. Devastated, she leaves the house and demands that he not follow her. Against her wishes, Robert finds her on the docks. She refuses to go home if he is there, so she goes alone. He arrives home the next day just as Holly is leaving for the airport to see Nanny in London. Holly is overwhelmed by his deception. He enquires as to when she will return and she can only offer him that she will be back for Celia’s wedding. Whilst Holly takes comfort in Nanny’s arms and receives some sage advice, Robert deals with the Aztec Treasure. He calls Holly in London. They share brief restrained pleasantries, before Robert says, “I miss you. I love you, Holly”
Sean contacts Algernon and claims to want to help Robert and Holly get back together. He plants the idea that Robert could be summoned to London if Holly were in danger. Algernon suggests that he call Robert and tell him that Holly has seen Basil. Sean takes delight in his ruse to get Robert out of Port Charles. Algernon follows through with the plan and calls Robert who takes the next flight to London. Holly is surprised to open the door to him. They talk and realize Algernon concocted the plan to reunite them and that Basil is far away from London and in touch with his probation officer therefore posing no threat to Holly. They share dinner together before Robert returns to Port Charles. Robert is pleased when Holly returns home. He cautiously courts her in an attempt to regain her trust. Just as she is coming around to the idea of continuing their life together, Holly discovers that Anna’s scar is a fake and that Robert knew and did not tell her. Yet another lie is one too many for Holly and she tells Robert she is leaving him. Her plans seem to be divorce, but she tells him he will be contacted first. She wants him to promise not to find her and he says he cannot do that. Prior to her departure, she overhears a conversation just outside of Sean Donely’s office. Realizing Robert must have the information; she leaves to tell him but not before one of Sean’s men sees her. She is kidnapped and no one is the wiser, as Robert believes she has left town and left him. Most of Port Charles takes off on the train to celebrate the nuptials of Celia and Jimmy Lee. Robert and Anna act as a couple as a cover to get to the bottom of the treasure situation. Whilst on board, Robert continues his covert investigation and during a telephone conversation hears Holly cry for help in the background. He now realizes Holly has been kidnapped. The wedding over, Robert searches for Holly and finds her abandoned in the woods in Canada. They share a tender reunion in the hospital. Holy fears the worst when Robert tells her his work is not over and he must go after Sean. After being released from the hospital, she spends time in the hotel with Celia and Burt awaiting word from Robert. He returns to her briefly before leaving once more. They are later reunited in the police station in Borderville. After spending the night in the honeymoon suite, they plan their future on their flight home to Port Charles. They decide to start a new life together in Australia. Once home, Robert will meet with Ballantine and Holly will make arrangements to fly to Australia with Nanny to set up shop before Robert joins her in a month. He wants her out of Port Charles whilst the case against Sean is wrapped. The reunited lovers make up for lost time by making love in their own bed in their own home. After running out of champagne, Robert ventures out of the bedroom not knowing that half of Port Charles has descended upon their living room for a surprise welcome home party. Robert and Holly join the party and share the news of their impending departure. The Scorpios spend the morning of Holly’s planned flight in bed. After which Holly makes her good-byes to Anna, Burt, and Bobbie. The couple shares a bittersweet good-bye at the airport. Robert returns home to find a little girl on his doorstep. He eventually finds out that she is Robin Scorpio, the daughter he shares with Anna, and never knew about. Various trials and tribulations befall Anna and Robin. The way is finally cleared for Robert to join his beloved wife Holly in Australia as they had planned months before. He goes to the hotel and is greeted by love notes strewn about the room, which lead to the bathroom. Holly waits for him in the bubble bath and he falls head over heels into the tub with her and they kiss passionately. |
