1992

1992 marked the return of our beloved duo to the small screen. It was the first time the couple graced the screen together since their respective departures in 1985. Much happened to our pair in those missing years together. Long story short, Holly died in a plane crash and Robert remarried Anna Devane. But back to our beloved twosome...

Robert is in New York to attend a birthday party in honor of his brother Mac given by Mac’s love interest, Dominique Taub. Sabrina Hamilton, their new next door neighbor, will also be in attendance. Little does anyone know that the beautiful, petite, English woman is none other than the “late” Holly Scorpio believed to have died in a plane crash in the Australian Outback in 1987. Holly was never on the plane that crashed. Rather her family had beckoned her home to England and whilst there she was in a terrible car accident rendering her comatose for 22 months. Her family, the Durbans, cared for her and took care of all medical expenses whilst keeping news of her whereabouts from Robert. Her existence has been kept a secret to him all these years. Feeling indebted to her family, she is in New York as part of their latest scam -- to retrieve a rare Egyptian stamp they feel is rightfully theirs. The stamp was most recently in the possession of Dominique’s late husband. With a buyer waiting, the family enlists Holly’s help to seal the deal. Resisting her family’s need for her to go to New York is futile and she now finds herself at Mac’s birthday party.

A blackout intrudes upon the party. Holly steals away to the master bedroom upstairs to fix her makeup by candlelight. With her back turned, Robert enters the darkened room and excuses himself for the interruption. Her world comes to a heart-stopping pause when she hears his voice. She turns to face him and is met with her beloved husband who instantly recognizes her. His face shows his surprise followed by supreme happiness at seeing her. The rest of the guests entering the room distract Robert and Holly takes the opportunity to flee. Robert searches for her. He finally pieces together that Sabrina Hamilton and Holly Scorpio are one and the same and he rushes, whilst the elevator stops on every floor, to her apartment only to find it empty upon arrival. He wanders around the rooms and comes across a bottle of bath salts. One whiff of the scent and memories of Holly flood him. He now knows she’s alive.

Holly takes refuge on her cousin Barry’s couch and talks to him about seeing Robert. “I just wanted to rush into his arms and kiss him and hold him,” she tells her cousin. “And tell him the truth,” he finishes. Holly admits she did want to tell Robert about the accident and the coma, but once she read news of his engagements and marriage things changed. Barry feels that Robert was just trying to get on with life. Holly’s anger is clear. She reveals her fear that Robert has written her “out of his life emotionally” and she cannot take that risk. She won’t see him again.

Unnerved by the previous night’s events, Robert and Mac talk at a local diner. Dominique interrupts with news that Sean left word for Robert that Anna has not been home all night. Before rushing back to Port Charles, Robert enlists Mac’s help in finding Holly. Once in Port Charles, it is suspected that Cesar Faison has kidnapped Anna. Robert informs Tiffany and Sean Donely about Holly’s return from the dead. Mac finds Holly at the airport and brings her to Dom’s apartment where she speaks with Robert on the telephone. He is eager to see her.

They meet. Holly’s fear and Robert’s initial happiness, tempered by shock at seeing her, are evident. What follows is a revelation of Holly’s whereabouts and Robert’s grief. Shortly after starting to tell her story, she asks him “How did you feel about me?” His incredulous response is tinged with anger. “I loved you. I loved you!” he all but yells at her as he uses the table for support. With a hint of bitterness he asks the same of her. She tearfully refers to the letter. He pauses and asks her to continue her story. He wonders aloud as to her priorities -- her family versus her husband. “We were always close,” she defends. Clearly pained, his anger rising, he repeats, “I loved you. I loved you with every part of my body!” With hostility, he tells her of his search of the plane wreckage, his mourning, the receipt of the letter months after the crash. He all but mocks the sentiments of her words as he quotes a portion of the letter to her. He angrily confronts her with her actions and the dam of tears lets loose as Holly realizes her fear is coming true. Believing that he hates her, she runs out of the room. After some time alone, he goes to her and apologizes for hurting her by letting everything come out.

Holly returns his anger with her own as she confronts him with his relationships with Katherine and Anna. Taken aback, but calm, he clarifies that those relationships happened after her “death”. True to form, they are interrupted by a telephone call from Mac. The WSB has information about Anna and Robert must leave for Washington straight away. All too familiar with the scenario that plagued them in times past, Holly resigns herself to the fact that he must leave. He does so albeit halting at the door and with a voiced wish to see her again... soon.

Holly telephones her Uncle Clive in an attempt to beg off any further involvement in the family’s scam. Uncle Clive won’t hear of it and reminds her that they are merely retrieving an item that rightfully belongs to their family. Holly expresses doubt and is quick to reassure Clive of her gratitude for his assistance with her recuperation from the car crash.

Back from DC, Robert literally runs into Holly in the elevator knocking the fruits of her shopping trip to the ground. He smiles upon realizing it is she and states his intentions to meet with her again. They agree to have dinner together.

At dinner, Holly shares more details of the accident. He is not surprised that her family did not tell him about her and he correctly assumes that she feels indebted to them. They realize they are still married. Holly enquires after Anna and Robert reveals the kidnapping and their history with Faison. Holly expresses her concern. He quickly changes the subject to the purpose of her presence in New York. She is evasive and asks him not to pursue the matter. Her attempts at light-heartedness fall flat. He asks if she’s seeing anyone. “No one since you,” she replies. Holly waxes poetic about Fate. With emotion, she questions the validity of their past relationship. She attempts to minimize what they meant to one another. He responds, I loved you. I loved you. And I know you felt the same way.” On the verge of tears, Holly has no response. She ends dinner abruptly. Whilst waiting at the coat check, they exchange mutual sentiments of wishing things had been different.

Having received another calling card from Faison, Robert bids Holly farewell as he makes his return to Port Charles. Before he leaves he wants to know why she came back to New York. She keeps her reasons to herself and informs him that she plans to return to England. They wish each other happiness and Robert shares his regret that their happiness could not be shared together. Holly brings up the topic of divorce and he says he will take care of it. They admit to each other, reluctantly, that it is better they go their separate ways.

Holly wants out of her family’s involvement with the stamp, which is now believed to be in Port Charles. She meets with the buyer of the stamp, Martin Petrie, to assure him of her family’s competency without her. Unbeknownst to her, Martin Petrie is none other than Cesar Faison. Barry arrives to reassure Faison. However, Martin/Cesar insists on Holly’s continued involvement and threatens to contact Uncle Clive if Barry is not successful in persuading Holly to continue. Left alone, Barry begs his cousin to remain on board. She is puzzled as to why her involvement is necessary and rifles through the desk drawers much to the amazement of her cousin. Holly suggests Barry speak to Faison in the other room under the guise of giving Holly time to reconsider her decision. Holly finds a playbill for “Scorpio Descending” by C. Faison as well as a letter addressed to Cesar Faison with the name “McTavish” in the return address. She reads the letter and is shocked to make the connection between Martin Petrie aka Cesar Faison and her beloved Nanny - Margaret McTavish. They are mother and son. Anxious to inform Robert, Holly departs with the playbill and is $50,000 richer - her price to remain involved. At the airport Holly informs Barry that she is not going to Port Charles rather she is going home to England. An altercation ensues, authorities remove Barry, and Holly purchases a one-way ticket home and then exchanges it for a ticket to Port Charles.

Whilst riding in a cab in Port Charles, Holly is overwhelmed with memories of her life with Robert. Not able to stand another minute, she asks the driver to let her out. She walks to Kelly’s where Ruby is shocked to see her. Holly asks after Robert, and Ruby tells her that he is living at the Webber house. Robert comes home to find Holly on his doorstep. She decides to come clean with him about her reasons for being in New York. Robert’s disdain of her family is evident, as is his pain for what they withheld from him. Robert is bitter as Holly struggles to tell him the truth about her actions with the family in the name of obligation. He enquires as to the buyer’s identity. She tells him about Faison. He calls his contact in New York. Robert will sit and wait until he hears word about Anna and there is a silent invitation for Holly to keep him company. She shares her suspicions with Robert that Faison may be Nanny McTavish’s son. They talk through the night and into the morning, before being interrupted by a telephone call. Faison is gone. Robert calls Mac and Dominique to tell them about the stamp. Turns out they just found it in Dom’s bedroom. Robert tells them to get to Port Charles with the stamp post haste.

Robert decides to lure Faison with his mother and summons Nanny to Port Charles. Robert and Holly pass the time waiting for Nanny to arrive drinking tea and reminiscing about happy times in their marriage.

Robert’s next move is to sequester Holly and Robin in the penthouse. Holly accompanies Nanny to her television appearance and makes a plea for Anna. Robert is angered and they argue. Holly flees to the penthouse. Tired of being contained, Robin gets on the elevator with her friend. The elevators stop. Holly can hear Robin call for help from the lift next to hers. Holly manages to exit the elevator through the top and stops a kidnapping attempt by Faison’s men. Robin screams for Robert whilst Holly battles Faison’s man in the elevator shaft. Robert hears Robin and runs through the staircase until he reaches the floor where the elevators are stuck. He pries open Holly’s car and yells her name. He shoots Faison’s man who falls to his death. Robert rushes to Holly and holds her in his arms.

Safe in the penthouse, Holly stays with Robin in Sean and Tiffany’s guest bedroom. After Robin falls asleep, Holly retrieves her purse. She and Robert share a tender moment of remembrance. He falls asleep and she covers him with a blanket and strokes his hair. Holly takes advantage of the precious opportunity and places a kiss on his forehead. She lingers before reluctantly moving away from him.

When Robin awakes from a nightmare, Holly comforts her. She assures Robin that Anna will be fine and to think good thoughts. Robert listens outside the door. Holly excuses herself when he comes in the room.

Robert and Holly meet up again and both are exhausted. He reveals he had been listening at the door when she spoke to Robin. Robert shares that Robin would like to go home and that if he should need to leave, Robin would like Holly to stay with her. Sleep overcomes him yet again and Holly again covers him and kisses him on the cheek. Whilst Robert is sleeping, Holly receives a call from Nanny. Faison has forced his mother into setting up a trap for Robert and Holly. Concerned for Nanny’s safety, Holly plans to go after her but not before erasing evidence of the conversation from the answering machine. She awakens Robert to tell him about the call. He will not allow her to go with him and checks the tape himself. Finding it silent, he realizes Holly’s plan. He has no choice but to take her with him. They arrive at the empty warehouse and encounter both Nanny and Faison. After an altercation, Nanny is dead at the hands of her son and Faison escapes via helicopter. Robert makes the decision to go after Faison and asks Mac and Holly to look after Robin.

In a short span of time following Robert’s departure from Port Charles, the divorce papers arrive for Holly. Sean and Mac tell Holly, Tiffany, and Robin that both Robert and Anna died in an explosion. A memorial service follows and Holly continues to mourn her husband. Talking with Tiffany she says, Robert was the love of my life and I'll never find that again.” She walks to the docks, rips up the divorce papers, and throws them in the Port Charles River.
